Basics

NAME: Varric Tethras
AGE: 41
NATIONALITY: Freemarcher
RACE: Dwarf
OCCUPATION: Author
HEIGHT: Tall Enough
BUILD: Stocky
HAIR: Fabulous. Blond
EYES: Hazel
BEARING: Casual and Charming
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Apart from being the dwarf with the giant crossbow? Well dressed, gold earrings, slight angle to his nose okay, he very obviously had his nose broken once, still handsome, and, well, basically looks like his author portrait which is, quite literally, everywhere. OH, and did I mention the chest hair? Glorious chest-hair.

Status

What's he up to, you ask?
Up to something? Now, why would a perfectly upstanding dwarf like him be up to something?
He's just minding his own business, doing absolutely nothing that should merit any sort of suspicion, writing letters while he warms his feet by the hearth in the main hall. Occasionally he can be found playing cards in the Herald's Rest or wandering the battlements--fresh air's important, keeps the creative juices flowing.

Reputation

Varric is a prolific author; his books are literally everywhere in Thedas. He's most famous for the Tale of the Champion, a story which details his adventures with Hawke, but his second most popular is Hard in Hightown, a noir crime thriller. (Of which there are approximately 48 copies around Skyhold.) He did not write the sequel (Hard in Hightown 2: Siege Harder) but very few people know that. It is truly terrible and if your character has read it, feel free to give him grief about just how terrible it is. He's also written some romance novels, a series called Swords and Shields, which are (by most reports) utterly unreadable. His portrait is on the back of every single book he's ever written, so feel free to have your characters know him on sight, and if they've read Tale of the Champion, they can basically quiz him on anything that happened (in this worldstate) in Dragon Age 2.

Hooks

Varric is an extremely personable dwarf; he's always down for a chat and loves to hear and tell stories. He loves meeting new people and is always happy to meet a fan.

While not exactly a hook, Varric is notorious for taking events/people from his life and altering them just slightly so he can put them in his books. He will do this repeatedly, probably with your characters, probably in a story with transparent foreshadowing and heavy-handed dialogue. He may have your character read this story and/or may grill them for tips with varying degrees of subtlety.

Basically, at some point, Varric will write friendfiction about everyone in Skyhold and it will be terrible. I'm sorry.

Approval & Gifts

APPROVES
+ Getting payment up front.
+ Helping people.
+ Compliments regarding Bianca (either).
+ Humor.
+ Enthusiasm.
+ Fans of his work.
DISAPPROVES
- Red Lyrium.
- The Deep Roads.
- Assholes (usually).
- People who talk shit about Hawke/Trevelyan.
- Emotional shut-ins/stoicism (usually).
- Unnecessary bloodshed.

GIFTS
So what do you get the dwarf who has everything? Something ridiculous, I'm sure. Varric doesn't want for much but he appreciates thoughtful, personal gifts and ridiculous touristy trash. Going to the ass end of Thedas? Get him a poster from a Zither! concert. Does your character make paper? He'd be stunned and elated. Flower crowns? Yes, bring it on.

I didn't write this, I only discovered it here, as collected and assembled by tumblr user fenharelmaghilana, as posted: Here. They did an astonishing amount of work on this and I appreciate it wholeheartedly, if you have a tumblr, please like/reblog them.

Copied in it's entirety, with some formatting adjustments (by me) for readability. Items by Brother Genitivi (i.e. most of the codex entries in the game) are in green, banned works are in red, unknown authors are in blue, and Varric's works are in purple.

I attempted to alphabetize it and gave up rather quickly. I may return to it at a later date.

A list of every book ever mentioned in every codex entry ever in Dragon Age. Beware, it’s really long. Authors are listed when known, and books that have been banned by the Chantry are noted as such.

Varric doesn't have much by the way of special abilities, so there's not much to opt out of.

If you would rather Varric not write bad fanfiction with a terrible knock-off-characterization of your character, please let me know.

Otherwise here are a pretty standard array of permissions for Varric, if you have questions that reside outside of this list, please leave a comment:

OOC:

Backtagging: Certainly! I try my best but sometimes I'll open a tag and lose it amid my tabs; if a couple of days have passed with no comment, this has probably happened. I apologize. If you want to tag into something old, please, feel free! I'm never sad to get new tags.
Threadhopping: Go for it. Varric is from Kirkwall; shouting over everyone around you and getting involved in other people's problems on accident are basically the national past-times.
Offensive subjects: I am fine with basically anything? Honestly, I have a propensity to write gore and violence with more description than other people are comfortable with, so if that bothers you let me know? Otherwise there is basically nothing that will really throw me.

IC:

Hugging this character: Go for it. Varric will take it with good humor.
Kissing this character: He won't react violently but he will let them down easy and probably keep an arm's length between himself and your character for a while.
Flirting with this character: Go nuts, unfortunately, you know what they say about Dragon Age Romances? Restriction: NOT VARRIC.
Fighting with this character: If you can goad Varric into a fight, go for it, it may take some doing. Otherwise he's pretty good at ducking and evading actual violence.
Injuring this character: Topical injuries? Have at. Anything more serious than a punch to the face or a fleshwound and we should probably talk it out.
Killing this character: Please, no.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Go for it, I hope your character enjoys bad fanfiction and running sarcastic commentary because that's what they're going to get.

Warnings: Nobody can resist the chest hair.
hugeinorlais: (Default)
(Varric's IC Inbox, for all letters, notes, fan-mail, death-threats, and other such correspondence. All messages from Sebastian Vael will be summarily ignored and placed into the Sebastian Vael pile.)
hugeinorlais: (Ladies can't resist the chest hair.)
How's my driving?

Is my Varric utterly terrible? Do you have pointers? Complaints? Critique? Advice? Praise, perhaps? I take all commentary, can be Anon or otherwise. IP logging is off, anon is enabled, and comments are screened for your convenience.

(On a related note: Is Varric's writing not quite terrible enough? Should I make it worse? Ideas on how to do that?)

Additionally, if we've got a thread going and you'd like to drop and/or handwave something, just let me know here.
